Bill Buford: Acclaimed Writer and Journalist
Early Life and EducationBill Buford was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1954. Raised in Southern California, he pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley. As a Marshall Scholar, a prestigious award for American students, Buford continued his education at King's College, University of Cambridge, where he specialized in Shakespearean literature.
Literary Career
After graduating, Buford remained in the UK throughout the 1980s. He became a fiction editor at The New Yorker and edited the literary magazine Granta for 16 years, from 1979 to 1995.
"Among the Thugs": An Insider's Perspective on Football Hooliganism
Buford's breakthrough came with the publication of "Among the Thugs" in the early 1990s. As an American journalist, he immersed himself within a gang of Manchester United supporters to gain an insider's view of football hooliganism. The book overturned traditional sociological theories and highlighted the complex social and class issues underlying the phenomenon.
Culinary Explorations
In 2006, Buford embarked on a new literary adventure with "Heat." To write this book, he worked for free in the kitchen of Mario Batali's New York City restaurant, Babbo. From dishwasher to butcher, Buford gained firsthand experience in the demanding world of professional cooking.
Italian and French Cuisine
Buford's culinary journey continued with trips to Italy to meet the chefs who influenced Batali. He lived and worked alongside Mario in the same places. Buford subsequently began work on a book about French cuisine. In 2007, he published "Extreme Chocolate: In Search of the Perfect Bean" in The New Yorker Magazine, chronicling his travels with chocolate connoisseur Fred Schilling.

In 2008, Salman Rushdie's novel "The Enchantress of Florence" was dedicated to Bill Buford, a testament to his literary and journalistic achievements.
