Early Life and Education

William P. Daly Jr. was born in Kinnelon, New Jersey, and grew up alongside his older sister, Denise. He excelled in academics and athletics, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in government with a minor in history from Dartmouth College in 1986. His interest in law led him to pursue a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law, which he earned in 1990.

Legal Career

Daly commenced his legal career at the prestigious New York-based law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in 1990. He demonstrated exceptional legal acumen, honing his skills over six years at the firm.

NHL Career

Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs

In 1996, Daly joined the National Hockey League (NHL) as Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs. He played a pivotal role in the league's operations, overseeing legal matters and international relations.

Deputy Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer

Daly's contributions were recognized in 2005 when he was appointed Deputy Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer. He became the NHL's lead negotiator in labor negotiations, successfully resolving the 2004-2005 NHL lockout.

Broadcasting and Media Rights

Daly's expertise extended to broadcasting and media rights negotiations. He spearheaded multi-year deals with Comcast and Rogers Communications, securing lucrative agreements for the NHL.

International Expansion

Daly fostered the NHL's global presence, negotiating agreements with the International Ice Hockey Federation and expanding the league's reach to Europe and Asia.

Additional Responsibilities

As Deputy Commissioner, Daly oversees the NHL's relationship with player associations, minor leagues, and hockey organizations. He is also the President of the NHL Foundation and a member of the Board of Governors for the Hockey Hall of Fame.
