Giirts Ankipāns: Latvian Ice Hockey Player and Coach

Giirts Ankipāns, a former Latvian ice hockey player, spent his early years in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, representing clubs such as Füssen and Landshut Cannibals. He later played for Dinamo Minsk and HK Riga 2000, before joining the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with Dinamo Riga in 2008.

KHL Career

Ankipāns played with Dinamo Riga for five seasons, until his contract was terminated by mutual consent in 2013. He finished the season with their farm team, Metallurgs Liepaja.

Retirement and Coaching

On July 1, 2013, Ankipāns announced his retirement from playing. The following day, he joined the coaching staff of Dinamo Riga. Two years later, he became an assistant coach for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod.

International Career

As a member of the Latvian national team, Ankipāns competed in the World Championships in 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2011. He also represented Latvia at the Winter Olympics in 2006 and 2010.
