Biography of Bill Kreutzmann

Bill Kreutzmann, the drummer of the American rock band "Grateful Dead," was born on May 7, 1946, in Palo Alto, California, USA. As a teenager, Bill showed his drumming skills, although his school music teacher once commented that he lacked both musicality and rhythm.

Early Musical Journey

While in school, Kreutzmann met future "Grateful Dead" members Jerry Garcia and Ron McKernan. Together with other young musicians, they formed a band called "Warlocks" in 1964, with Bill naturally taking on the drums. The band's first real performance took place on May 5, 1965, just two days before Kreutzmann's nineteenth birthday. Since the group often played in bars, Bill had to use fake documents under a different name, as American laws prohibited underage entry into drinking establishments. In November 1965, "Warlocks" changed their name to "Grateful Dead."

"Rhythm Devils" and Musical Influence

Soon, another drummer, Mickey Hart, joined the band, and Kreutzmann's acquaintance with him had a tremendous influence on his musical career. Spending a lot of time together, "Grateful Dead" became one of the few bands with two drummers. The drumming duo, known as the "Rhythm Devils," became the group's trademark, and their performances received critical acclaim. In 1969, they made a remarkable impact at the Woodstock music festival, despite various equipment issues, including one musician being electrocuted.

Life in "Grateful Dead" and Post-Band Career

Kreutzmann remained with "Grateful Dead" until the band disbanded in 1995, following the death of Jerry Garcia due to a weakened heart caused by drug use. In 2006, Kreutzmann, Hart, and several former "Grateful Dead" members formed a new band called "Rhythm Devils" and released an album featuring unreleased "Grateful Dead" songs and new tracks. The group embarked on a tour across America, culminating in a grand show in Las Vegas. "Rhythm Devils" continues to exist to this day, although the only constant members are Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. The band rarely goes on tour.

Personal Life and Family

Bill Kreutzmann has an adult son named Justin Kreutzmann, who is a director of several music films, including those about the work of "Grateful Dead." His daughter, Stacy, and her husband own a printing press and advertising agency in California.
