Biography of Billy Butlin

Billy Butlin, an English businessman, was the founder of the Butlins Holiday Camps network. In 1964, he was knighted, although he was not the first knighted Butlin, as that honor was previously bestowed upon the renowned surgeon Sir Henry Trentham Butlin.

Early Life and Family Background

Billy Butlin was born in South Africa. His father, William Butlin, was the son of a priest, while his mother, Bertha Hill, came from a family of traveling actors. Their marriage was a disappointment to their families, leading them to leave their native Leonard Stanley, Gloucester, UK and move to Africa. However, their marriage eventually ended, and Bertha returned to England with Billy. They settled in Bristol, where Bertha successfully reconciled with her family. Billy traveled the world with his mother, who resumed her acting career, until she remarried and left for Canada in 1911.

Life in Canada

Billy spent several years in Bristol before his mother and stepfather invited him to Toronto, Canada. Life in Canada was not easy for Billy, as he disliked the local school, and his classmates constantly teased him for his British accent. At the age of 14, Billy left school. He eventually found work as a messenger at Toronto's largest retail store, "Eatons." One of the perks of this job was the opportunity to visit the company's summer camp, where young Butlin finally experienced what real holidays should be like.

Military Service and Career in Entertainment

During World War I, Butlin voluntarily joined the Canadian army, although he did not see any active combat. After the war, he returned to England and initially worked at a fairground attraction owned by his mother's family. It soon became clear that Butlin had a natural talent for entertaining the public. He moved to London and opened his own establishment near Bertram Mills' Christmas Circus. By the end of the season, Butlin had accumulated a substantial amount of money and was able to bring his widowed mother back from Canada.

Founding Butlins Holiday Camps

Butlin had long harbored the idea of creating holiday camps. On April 11, 1936, he opened his first camp near Ingoldmells village. The official opening was performed by Amy Johnson, the first woman to complete a solo flight from England to Australia. Guests at the camp received three meals a day and free access to entertainment activities. The cost of accommodation ranged from 35 shillings to 3 pounds per week, depending on the time of year. The park was incredibly successful, and soon similar establishments began to appear across the country. The development of Butlin's business was significantly hindered by World War II when some of his establishments were requisitioned for soldier training camps.

Later Life and Legacy

In the 1950s, Butlin started purchasing hotels in Brighton, Blackpool, and Cliftonville, which he reorganized into a new network closely connected to his holiday camps. In 1964, Billy Butlin was knighted, becoming Sir Billy Butlin. However, it is worth noting that he was not the first knighted Butlin, as that distinction was previously granted to the distinguished surgeon Sir Henry Trentham Butlin. In 1968, Butlin decided to retire, and in 1972, his company was sold to the 'Rank Organization' for £43 million.

Billy Butlin passed away on June 12, 1980, at the age of 80. He was buried on the island of Jersey, where his gravesite features a headstone shaped like a double bed.
