Billy Cox: A Legendary Bassist in the Shadow of Jimi Hendrix
Early Life and Military ServiceBilly Cox was born into a musical family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a young man, he honed his bass guitar skills and served in the U.S. Army. While stationed in Germany, Cox crossed paths with a fellow soldier named Jimi Hendrix. The two formed a bond and played together in the group King Kasuals.
A Sonorous Alliance
Upon returning to the United States, Cox and Hendrix continued their musical collaboration, performing in rhythm-and-blues clubs in Nashville. When Hendrix departed for England in 1966 to form The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he initially sought Cox's involvement. However, Cox declined, preferring to stay rooted in his local scene.
Gypsy Sun and Rainbows
In 1969, Hendrix extended an invitation to Cox to join him for the Woodstock music festival as part of Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. The band's performance was unforgettable, showcasing their fusion of jazz, blues, and psychedelic rock.
Band of Gypsys and Beyond
Soon after Woodstock, Cox and Hendrix formed the Band of Gypsys. The group's debut album, released in early 1970, remains a testament to their musical brilliance. However, the band's existence was short-lived, disbanding later that year.
The Cry of Love and Solo Projects
Hendrix enlisted Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell to form a new group, The Cry of Love. They recorded an album of the same name, which was released posthumously after Hendrix's tragic death in 1970. Cox later released his own solo album, "Nitro Function," in 1971.
Honoring Jimi's Legacy
In 1975, Cox partnered with Buddy Miles on "Crash Landing," an album featuring unreleased Hendrix recordings. Cox's contributions to Hendrix's legacy continued with the posthumous release of "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" in 1997.
Gypsy Sun Experience and Later Collaborations
Cox formed Gypsy Sun Experience with Mitchell and guitarist Gary Serkin in homage to Hendrix's music. He also collaborated with the Charlie Daniels Band and guitarist Bruce Cameron on the Hendrix-inspired album "Midnight Daydream."
