Blagovest Sendov: A Bulgarian Mathematician and Political Figure
Born in the Bulgarian town of Asenovgrad (then known as Stanimaka), Blagovest Sendov's path to academia was marked by challenges. His father, Hrista Sendov, was a prominent industrialist, whose family's ties to the Germans during World War II led to the young Sendov being excluded from the Union of People's Youth.
Education and Career in Mathematics
Undeterred, Sendov pursued an unconventional route. He joined the cleaning service of Sofia's Blagoevski district council to establish residency in the capital, allowing him to enroll in the Faculty of Mathematics at Sofia University. Despite his initial dismissal as an assistant due to his political history, Sendov's talents were recognized. After a two-year stint as a school teacher, he returned to the university as an assistant professor.
In 1964, Sendov defended his PhD dissertation at Sofia University. Three years later, he earned his doctorate from the Steklov Institute of Mathematics (MIAM). His research focused on approximation theory and computational geometry. Over his illustrious career, Sendov published more than 200 scientific papers, seven monographs, and 30 textbooks, including the renowned "Mathematical Analysis" co-authored with V.A. Ilyin and V.A. Sadovnichiy.
Service to Sofia University
Sendov's contributions to Sofia University were significant. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics from 1970 to 1973 and as Rector from 1973 to 1979. During this time, he became a professor of numerical methods. He also played a role in reforming Bulgaria's school education system, advocating for early childhood learning.
Political Career
In addition to his academic achievements, Sendov ventured into politics. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 1992, garnering only 2% of the votes. However, he was elected as Speaker of the Bulgarian National Assembly from 1995 to 1997 and Vice-Speaker from 1997 to 2004. Although he was never a member of the Communist Party, his ties to Todor Zhivkov have been widely acknowledged.
Honors and Recognition
Throughout his career, Sendov received numerous accolades:Honorary Doctorate from Moscow State University (1977)
Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1998)
Foreign Member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences (2000)
Diplomatic Mission
Since 2004, Sendov has served as Bulgaria's ambassador to Japan. His exceptional contributions to both mathematics and public life have left a lasting legacy in Bulgaria and beyond.
