Blase Leibel: A Notorious Murderer
Early Life and TiesBlase Leibel was born on May 8, 1981, in Toronto, Ontario, to Lorne Leibel, a prominent businessman, and Eleanor Chital Leibel. According to the 2017 memoir "Ice Capades" by former NHL player Sean Avery, he and Leibel briefly lived together as a couple.
The Horrific Crime
On May 26, 2016, Leibel barricaded himself inside his West Hollywood apartment and brutally attacked Ukrainian model Iana Kasian. Police discovered Kasian's lifeless body, drained of blood and covered with a Mickey Mouse blanket. Leibel was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including first-degree murder.
The Trial and Sentencing
The trial that followed was one of the most disturbing in recent memory. Graphic photographs of the crime scene were presented to the jury, revealing the extent of Leibel's savagery. Prosecutors alleged that he had skinned Kasian and drained her blood while she was still alive.
On June 20, 2018, Leibel was found guilty of first-degree murder, torture, mayhem, and use of a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
A Troubled Childhood
Leibel's childhood was reportedly turbulent. His parents divorced when he was young, and he witnessed his father's alleged infidelity. He displayed a fascination with violence and death from an early age.
The Inspiration from "Syndrome"
Prosecutors argued that Leibel may have planned the murder based on elements from the 2010 graphic novel "Syndrome," on which he collaborated. The novel depicts a scientist experimenting with a psychopathic killer in a fruitless attempt to find a "cure for evil."
Kasian's Legacy
Iana Kasian, a Ukrainian immigrant, had come to the United States in search of a better life. She gave birth to a daughter just three weeks before her tragic death. Her family and friends mourned her loss and advocated for justice.
The Aftermath
Leibel's former wife, model Amanda Braun, testified during the trial. Their children were not present at the hearings. Leibel's brother, Cody, attended most of the court sessions, visibly distraught after the verdict was announced.
