Biography of Blanche Yurka

Blanche Yurka, born on June 18, 1887, in St. Paul, Minnesota, was an American actress of Czech immigrant descent. Prior to becoming an actress, she worked as an opera singer. Yurka made her Broadway debut in 1910 and established herself as a character actress. Not only did she perform on stage, but she also worked as a theatrical playwright and director. In 1922, Yurka married actor Jan Kiepura, who was 12 years younger than her, but they divorced four years later. In addition to her stage work, she appeared in over 20 films from 1917 to 1961. Some of her most famous roles were in movies such as "A Tale of Two Cities" (1935), "The Song of Bernadette" (1943), and "The Southerner" (1945). She continued to act and perform actively until the mid-1960s.
