Blind Channel: A Finnish Rock Band with a Unique Sound
Formation and LineupEstablished in Finland in 2013, Blind Channel traces its roots back to the musical camaraderie of Joel Hokka (vocals), Joonas Porko (guitar), Olli Matela (bass), and Tommi Lalli (drums). Their shared passion laid the foundation for their distinct sound. The band completed its lineup with rapper Niko Moilanen, whose idea for the band's name solidified their identity.
Music and Early Success
Blind Channel's initial rehearsals took place in a humble garage, fueled by their belief in their potential. Unexpectedly, they secured a headlining gig at Club 45 Special due to the prior band's misfortune. Subsequently, they unleashed their debut EP, "Antipode," which featured popular tracks like "Naysayers" and "Calling Out."
Their international breakthrough came through their participation in the Wacken Metal Battle, which earned them a coveted performance slot at the renowned Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. Their reputation in Finland grew steadily, leading to appearances at major music venues and a victory in YleX's band competition that propelled them to Belgium.
Debut Album and International Acclaim
2015 marked a significant milestone with the release of their mini-album "Foreshadows" and a deal with Ranka Kustannus. Their debut full-length album, "Revolutions," arrived in 2016 to critical acclaim, showcasing their eclectic blend of rock, rap, and electronic elements. This release paved the way for collaborations with Amaranthe and Royal Republic.
"Blood Brothers" and Style Evolution
Their sophomore album, "Blood Brothers," further refined their sound and introduced a distinct visual identity marked by a predilection for red and white. The album spawned hits like "Like a Brother," "Wolfpack," and "Sharks Love Blood." Its subsequent tour brought about a noticeable shift in their musical direction.
"Violent Pop" and "Dark Side"
With the release of "Violent Pop" in 2020, Blind Channel transitioned to a more somber black-and-silver color scheme. The album featured previously released singles like "Snake," "Lanterns," and "One of Us." The pandemic disrupted their planned tour, leading to the release of a cover of Anastacia's "Left Outside Alone" during quarantine.
In 2021, the band announced their participation in Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, Finland's Eurovision Song Contest entry selection. Their song "Dark Side" became an instant fan favorite. They emerged victorious at the contest, making a memorable performance that included a symbolic middle finger gesture expressing their frustration with the global situation.
Ongoing Journey
Blind Channel continues to push boundaries, expanding their repertoire and connecting with their fans through live performances, social media updates, and new releases. Their unique style and unwavering dedication have made them a captivating force in the Finnish rock scene and beyond.
