Early Life and Education
Bob Benmosche was born on May 29, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, into a Jewish family. One of his great-grandfathers, Moshe Kreiskol, was one of the first Jews allowed to serve in the Russian army in the 19th century and was originally from Lithuania. His family immigrated to the United States in 1894, brought by his grandfather, Rabbi Herman Benmosche. When Benmosche was 10 years old, his father passed away, leaving behind debts totaling $250,000 and an unfinished construction project called the 'Patio Motel' in Monticello, New York. Despite these challenges, the family managed to keep the motel afloat, and a young Benmosche helped with its operations, including carrying guests' belongings and managing the switchboard. He obtained his driver's license at an early age and worked as a truck driver for the 'Coca-Cola' company while pursuing his education. Benmosche graduated from Alfred University in 1966 with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics.
Career
After serving as a lieutenant in the United States Army for two years, including a deployment in Korea where he led the field communication setup for the troops, Benmosche began his career as a consultant at 'Arthur D. Little,' an international consulting firm. In 1975, he joined 'Chase Manhattan,' and in 1982, he became a part of 'Paine Webber,' where he was responsible for asset management. Over his 14 years at 'Paine Webber,' Benmosche gained experience in marketing and managing various divisions, eventually rising to the position of Chief Financial Officer in the company's retail business. As his career at 'Paine Webber' progressed, Benmosche took on additional responsibilities and eventually became an Executive Vice President and Director of Operations, Management, and Technology. In this role, he oversaw the merger of the operations and systems departments of 'Kidder Peabody' and 'Paine Webber.' In 1995, Benmosche joined 'Metropolitan Life Insurance Company,' where he later became President and Chief Operating Officer. In 1998, he became Chairman of the Board and CEO of the company, and in 2006, he resigned. Additionally, Benmosche served on the board of 'Credit Suisse AG' for eleven years before stepping down in April 2013.
Personal Life
Bob Benmosche owns a property called 'Splendid' in Dubrovnik, Croatia. In 2001, he purchased a former nightclub and spent the next six years transforming it into a hotel. In 2006, he bought a piece of land and planted fifteen hundred vines of Zinfandel, a red grape from the Napa Valley region in California. In 2011, Benmosche's vineyards produced 3000 bottles of wine under the brand name 'The Benmosche Family Dingac.' In 2010, he was diagnosed with cancer but continued his work, balancing his leadership of AIG with intensive chemotherapy treatments. In August 2014, Benmosche announced his resignation from AIG due to the progression of his illness. Doctors estimated he had between nine months and a year to live.
