Bob Denver: Biography of an American Comedy Actor

Bob Denver is an American comedy actor best known for his role as Gilligan in the television series 'Gilligan's Island'. Before this, Denver became the first actor to portray Dudley 'Dud' Wash in 'The Andy Griffith Show', and even earlier, he appeared as beatnik Maynard G. Krebs in the TV series 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis'.

Early Life and Education

Robert Osborne Denver was born on January 9, 1935, in New Rochelle, New York, USA. He grew up in Brownwood and graduated from Loyola University in Los Angeles, California. After attending the Sylvia Herpolscheiemer Academy for Performance Arts, the future actor found his first job as a mailman and later taught physical education and mathematics at Corpus Christi School, a Roman Catholic elementary school.

Acting Career

Denver made his acting debut in the musical comedy film 'A Private's Affair' in 1959, alongside Sal Mineo. Along with Dwayne Hickman, he became a star in the series 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis' in 1959 and also had a small role as an unrequited lover in 'The Andy Griffith Show'.

Denver landed a cameo role in Henry Koster's comedy film 'Take Her, She's Mine' in 1963, starring James Stewart. He also appeared in the beach film 'For Those Who Think Young' with Tina Louise before earning the lead role in 'Gilligan's Island'. In 1967, Denver portrayed Willie Owens in Howard Morris' comedy film 'Who's Minding the Mint?'.

Although Bob Denver is primarily known as a comedy actor, he showcased his talent in dramatic roles as well. He appeared as Dr. Paul Garrett in the episode 'If You Can't Handle the Truth' of the series 'Dr. Kildare' on October 10, 1963, alongside Barbara Eden and Ken Berry. After completing the filming of 'Gilligan's Island', Denver continued to work in television, appearing in shows such as 'The Good Guys', 'Love, American Style', and 'Dusty's Trail'.

In 1975, he participated in the children's program 'Far Out Space Nuts', created by Sid and Marty Krofft. The following year, Denver portrayed Dusty in the comedy western film 'The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West'. He later returned to the role of Gilligan, this time voicing the animated character in 'The New Adventures of Gilligan' and its sequel, 'Gilligan's Planet'.

From 1978 to 1980, Denver played four different characters in the popular series 'Fantasy Island' with Ricardo Montalban. However, none of his appearances in the highly-rated show overshadowed the success of his previous iconic roles.

Later Years and Personal Life

In 1998, Denver was arrested after a package of marijuana was delivered to him. Initially, he claimed the package was sent by Dawn Wells (an actress who portrayed Mary Ann in 'Gilligan's Island'), but later retracted his statement in court, stating that "some crazy fan must have sent it". The police reportedly found several plants and drug-related paraphernalia in Denver's home. The actor chose not to contest the charges and received six months of probation.
