Bob Gainey: A Canadian Hockey Legend

Bob Gainey is a former Canadian hockey player and the current general manager of the Montreal Canadiens. He spent his entire career playing for the Canadiens, winning the Stanley Cup five times with the team. He was selected in the first round of the 1973 NHL Draft as the 8th overall pick. From 1981 until the end of his career, Gainey served as the captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

After retiring as a player, Gainey went on to win his sixth Stanley Cup as the general manager of the Dallas Stars in 1999. He led the Stars to victory that year. Gainey is now back with the Montreal Canadiens as their general manager.

During his NHL career, Gainey played 1160 regular season games, scoring 239 goals and providing 263 assists. In 1992, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was also named the 86th best player in NHL history by Hockey News in 1998.

On February 23, 2008, the Montreal Canadiens retired Gainey's number 23. He was a finalist for the Canada Cup in 1981 and a winner of the Stanley Cup in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1986, and 1999 (as a general manager). Gainey was also the recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981, as well as the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1979.

Outside of his NHL career, Gainey was a bronze medalist in the World Championships in 1982 and 1983. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto since 1992 and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame since 1995.
