Bob the Drag Queen: A Trailblazing Performer and Advocate
Bob the Drag Queen, born Caldwell Tidicue, is an American drag queen, comedian, actor, activist, musician, and reality television personality. They are best known for winning season 8 of RuPaul's Drag Race. As of 2020, they have over one million followers on social media, making them the first Black drag queen to reach this milestone.
Early Life and Influences
Caldwell was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1986. They grew up in Clayton County, Georgia, describing it as "the hood." Their mother, Martha Caldwell, owned a drag bar in Columbus. When she lacked a babysitter, she would bring Caldwell to the bar, where they worked and collected tips. Caldwell credits their mother with fostering their early confidence.
As a teenager, Caldwell attended Morrow High School in Ellenwood, Georgia. They then returned to Columbus to study theater arts at Columbus State University. They first performed in drag at a lesbian party during Pride Month 2008.
Drag Career and Breakthrough
Caldwell moved to Queens, New York, at the age of 22 with $500 and two suitcases. They initially aimed to become an actor and stand-up comedian. Before drag, they worked in children's theater for many years.
In the summer of 2009, Caldwell began pursuing drag after watching season 1 of RuPaul's Drag Race on TiVo. They started performing stand-up comedy in drag after a few months and began lip-syncing shortly after. Their initial stage name was Kittin Withawhip.
Caldwell initially faced challenges as a drag performer. They struggled to book gigs and win competitions. In 2013, they officially changed their stage name to Bob the Drag Queen.
Post-Drag Race Career
After winning Drag Race, Bob released the single "Purse First" in 2016. They have collaborated with Alaska Thunderfuck and appeared in various music videos and podcasts. They have also released two comedy specials, "Bob the Drag Queen: Suspiciously Large Woman" and "Bob the Drag Queen: Crazy Black Lady."
In addition to drag, Bob has acted in television shows such as "High Maintenance," "Tales of the City," and "A Black Lady Sketch Show." They co-hosted the HBO show "We're Here" alongside fellow Drag Race alums Eureka O'Hara and Shangela.
Activism and Advocacy
Bob is an LGBT activist and has spoken out about their experiences protesting for queer rights. They are the co-founder of Black Queer Town Hall, an organization that hosts events and raises funds for Black queer causes.
Bob identifies as polyamorous, pansexual, and non-binary. They use the pronouns he/him or she/her. As of January 2023, they have been sober for 14 years.
