Bob Woodruff: American Journalist
Early Life and EducationRobert Woodruff was born in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to Robert Woodruff Sr. and Fran Woodruff. He graduated from Colgate University in 1983 with a bachelor's degree and went on to earn a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1987.
Career
After briefly working at Shearman & Sterling law firm, Woodruff moved to Beijing in 1989 to teach law. It was in Beijing that he first tried his hand at professional reporting, covering the Tiananmen Square incident for CBS News. He soon left law and pursued journalism full-time, working for various outlets before settling at ABC News.
Taji Bombing and Recovery
On January 29, 2006, Woodruff and Canadian cameraman Doug Vogt were critically injured when an improvised explosive device exploded near Taji, Iraq, 12 miles north of Baghdad. They were part of an ABC News team covering the aftermath of the 2006 Palestinian elections and meeting with U.S. troops. Woodruff and Vogt survived thanks to their body armor and helmets, but suffered severe shrapnel wounds. Woodruff underwent extensive surgery, including the removal of part of his skull.
Return to Television
After a lengthy recovery, Woodruff made his first public appearance on three television programs on February 27, 2007: "Good Morning America," "ABC World News with Charles Gibson," and "The Oprah Winfrey Show." It became evident that Woodruff had significant difficulty recalling words and details, despite his doctors' efforts. A documentary film later featured him as an example of the brain injuries veterans suffered in recent wars.
Continued Work and Focus Earth
Despite his injuries, Woodruff returned to ABC's "World News with Charles Gibson" on February 28, and began giving interviews and reporting regularly on March 7. On June 12, 2008, he launched a new weekly environmental news program, "Focus Earth with Bob Woodruff." The program covers global climate change, environmental legislation, and related political debates, often exploring the intersection of climate and culture.
Personal Life
Woodruff married Lee McConaughy in 1988, and they have four children. He is fluent in English, German, and Mandarin Chinese. Contrary to popular belief, Bob Woodruff is not related to journalist Judy Woodruff.
