Early Life and Education

Nicholas Robinson was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and his fascination with journalism began at the tender age of eight. He pursued higher education at University College, Oxford, where he specialized in philosophy, politics, and economics.

Journalistic Journey

Robinson's career in journalism commenced in 1982, when he landed his first 'broadcasting' role at Manchester Radio. A significant accident during a European trip left him severely burned, but it also provided him with an opportunity to focus on his recovery and take on a producing role for BBC's television and radio projects.

Rise at BBC

In 1993, Robinson was appointed Deputy Editor of 'Panorama,' television's longest-running current affairs program. Three years later, he released an internal memo regarding Prime Minister John Major and the upcoming Scottish elections, which sparked controversy and allegations of biased coverage.

Political Correspondency and Shift to ITN

Robinson's transition to political correspondent began in 1996, where he worked across numerous BBC radio programs. By 1999, he rose to become the Chief Political Commentator for 'BBC News 24.' In 2002, Robinson made a bold move to Independent Television News (ITN) as their Political Editor, where he challenged the Labor Party on false claims in election leaflets.

A Provocative Commentator

Robinson's sharp interviewing style continued at ITN, as he questioned Tony Blair on the lack of diversity at a crucial election speech. After initially denying the absence of Asian attendees, Blair was forced to acknowledge the truth.

Return to BBC

In 2005, Robinson returned to BBC and continued his provocative approach. During Tony Blair's visit to Israel, Robinson and fellow journalist Tom Bradby pressed Blair on his conflicts with Gordon Brown. He also confronted George W. Bush on the situation in Iraq, earning a memorable recommendation from the president to "cover up that bald spot."

Current Role

Nicholas Robinson currently blogs on BBC's website, offering his incisive political commentary.
