Despite the Ontario Hockey League's statement that they do not accept junior players, Bobby Ryan became a player for the Owen Sound Attack. He quickly gained attention with his impressive rookie performance, scoring 39 points in the 2003-2004 season and 89 points in the following season. In 2005, Ryan received an invitation to join the Anaheim Ducks but did not immediately play in the main lineup.

NHL Career

Ryan officially ended his Ontario Hockey League career in the 2006-2007 season. After being eliminated from the playoffs, he played for the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the final eight games of the AHL season. He then started the new 2007-2008 season with the Anaheim Ducks and scored his first NHL goal in his debut game against the Los Angeles Kings, which took place in London, United Kingdom. He finished the season with 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists).

After four games, Ryan returned to the AHL but was called back up to the main lineup on March 7, 2008, due to Corey Perry's leg injury. In the 2008-2009 season, Ryan played for the Ducks' affiliate team, the Iowa Chops, due to salary disagreements. However, he eventually returned to the main lineup and seized the opportunity to showcase his skills. In a game against the Los Angeles Kings in January 2009, he recorded his first hat-trick. Ryan became the first rookie in Anaheim Ducks' history to score three goals in one game, and it was the fastest hat-trick in the team's 15-year existence. He finished the season with 31 goals and 26 assists in 64 games. On April 22, Ryan was nominated for the Calder Trophy but lost to goaltender Steve Mason.
