Early Career and NHL Draft

Josh Gorges began his hockey career with his hometown team, the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL, where he spent four seasons. Despite going undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft, Gorges signed a free agent contract with the San Jose Sharks on September 20, 2002.

Success with the Kelowna Rockets and San Jose Sharks

After a successful 2003-04 season with the Rockets, who won the Memorial Cup and earned Gorges the George Parsons Trophy, he joined the Sharks. In his time with San Jose, Gorges primarily served as a reserve defenseman.

Trade to Montreal Canadiens

On February 25, 2007, Gorges was traded to the Montreal Canadiens. In Montreal, he quickly became a regular in the lineup and established himself as a top defenseman and team leader. His contributions were recognized by sports commentators, including Don Cherry, who stated that Gorges deserved to be the team's next captain, following the departure of Saku Koivu.

Captaincy and Recognition

Gorges was awarded the Jacques Beauchamp Trophy in 2011 and 2012, recognizing his unheralded contributions to the team. In 2011, he was named an alternate captain. He signed a six-year contract extension with Montreal worth $23.4 million in 2012.

Trade to Buffalo Sabres

On July 1, 2014, the Canadiens traded Gorges to the Buffalo Sabres for a second-round draft pick in 2016.

Gorges represented Canada at the 2004 World Junior Championships, helping the team earn a silver medal.
