Bogodar Kotorovich: Childhood and Early Life

Bogodar Kotorovich was born on July 3, 1941, in the small Polish town of Hrubieszów. In 1945, his family relocated to Volyn and subsequently to Lviv, where he completed his musical education at a music school. After studying for a year at the Lviv Conservatory, he was invited to join the illustrious class of Professor Yuri Yankilevich at the Moscow Conservatory.

International Recognition and Career as a Performer

While still a student, Kotorovich won accolades at several prestigious international competitions, including the N. Paganini Competition in Genoa and the D. Enescu Competition in Bucharest. Upon graduating from the Moscow Conservatory in 1966, he became the concertmaster of the Ukrainian State Symphony Orchestra and a soloist with the Kyiv State Philharmonic.

Academic and Pedagogical Contributions

From 1967, Kotorovich pursued a successful pedagogical career at the Kyiv Conservatory, eventually becoming the Head of the Violin Department. He also taught at the Sydney Conservatory in Australia from 1994. In 1995, he founded the First International Competition for Young Violinists named after him.

Establishment of the "Kyiv Soloists" Ensemble

In 1995, Kotorovich established the State Chamber Ensemble "Kyiv Soloists," which he led as Artistic Director until his passing. Under his guidance, the ensemble gained international acclaim and became known as one of the world's leading chamber music groups.

International Jury and Festival Involvement

Kotorovich served as a juror at numerous international competitions, including the ARD Competition in Munich, the N. Paganini Competition in Genoa, and the Britten Kyiv Festival, which he directed from 2003. He was also the artistic director of the International Competition named after N. Lysenko in Kyiv.

Legacy and Recognition

Bogodar Kotorovich was a true pioneer of the contemporary Ukrainian violin school. His students included distinguished musicians such as Alina Komissarova, Bohdana Pivnenko, and Dmytro Tkachenko. He was the only Ukrainian violinist entrusted with performing on the treasured instrument of the renowned Niccolò Paganini. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to music, Kotorovich was awarded the prestigious "Person of the Year" award in 1999 and 2000. He was also a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine (1997).
