Biography of Bonita Granville
Bonita Granville was born on February 2, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois. Coming from an acting family, she started her career as an actress at the young age of nine. Some of her early films include "Cavalcade" (1933) and "Little Women" (1933). Three years later, she starred in the film "These Three" and received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mary Tilford.
Nancy Drew and Detective Films
In 1938, Bonita played the role of Nancy Drew in the film "Nancy Drew - Detective." The film was a huge success, and she went on to portray Nancy Drew in three more films.
Continued Acting Career
During the 1940s, Granville continued to act and appeared in films such as "Forward, Voyager" (1942) and "Hitler's Children" (1943). However, her career began to decline towards the end of the decade.
Bonita Granville and the Secret of Star Island
In 1942, Bonita became the main character in the novel "Bonita Granville and the Secret of Star Island" written by Catherine Haysenfelt. The novel was aimed at a teenage audience, and the main character strongly resembled Bonita's portrayal of Nancy Drew. The book became popular, and several more books in the series were released until 1947.
Marriage, Producing, and Television Work
In 1947, Bonita married Jack Reiters, who was a producer of some of her films. In 1954, as her film career declined, Granville became a producer in the television series "Lassie." She also appeared in several episodes and served as the narrator for some episodes. The series ran until 1974.
Later Years and Legacy
Bonita Granville's last film role was a cameo appearance in the film "The Legend of the Lone Ranger" in 1981. Her husband Jack Reiters passed away in 1984, and Bonita herself died four years later on October 11, 1988, in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 65 due to lung cancer. In recognition of her contributions to the film industry, Bonita was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6607 Hollywood Boulevard.
