Reign of Boril
Accession and ConspiracyBoril ascended to the throne of Bulgaria after the death of Tsar Kaloyan. Historians speculate that he may have been involved in a plot to assassinate Kaloyan.
Persecution of the Asens
Upon taking power, Boril initiated a persecution of the Asen dynasty. Potential claimants to the throne, including the future tsar Ivan Asen II, fled the country.
Territorial Losses and Instability
Bulgaria's power had waned due to external aggression and internal strife. Under Boril's weak leadership, the kingdom lost significant territory in the south and west.
Foreign Incursions and Alliances
Latin Emperor Henry conquered significant Bulgarian territories, including Philippopolis in 1208. Boril sought an alliance with Henry by marrying his daughter to the emperor in 1211.
Rebellion and Foreign Intervention
Dissatisfied with Boril's rule, Bulgarian nobles supported Ivan Asen II's claim to the throne. Hungary also took advantage of Bulgaria's weakness and captured Belgrade and Branichev.
Persecution of Bogomils
Boril attempted to strengthen his position by convening a council in 1211 and condemning the Bogomil heresy. However, his persecution of religious dissenters alienated many of his subjects.
Overthrow
In 1218, Boril was overthrown by Ivan Asen II, the rightful heir to the throne. Boril's reign had been characterized by instability, territorial losses, and religious persecution.
