Early Life and Education

Georgi Parvanov was born on June 28, 1957, in the village of Sirishnik, Bulgaria. In 1975, he graduated from the Mathematics High School in Pernik and proceeded to enroll in the History Faculty of Sofia University, graduating in 1981. In 1988, he obtained a doctorate in history.

Academic Career

Parvanov joined the Institute of History as a research associate in 1981. His research focused on the Bulgarian national question and the emergence of Bulgarian social democracy. In 1989, he became a senior research associate, and from 1992 to 1996, he served as director of the Center for Historical and Political Studies at the BSP Supreme Council.

Political Career

Parvanov joined the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) in 1981, becoming its deputy chairman in 1994 and chairman in 2000. He was elected to the National Assembly (Parliament) in 1994.

Presidency

On January 22, 2002, Georgi Parvanov was sworn in as the President of the Republic of Bulgaria. During his presidency, he authored several academic publications, including the book "Before and After the Tenth" (referring to the fall of Communism in Bulgaria), published in 2001.

Personal Life

Parvanov is married and has two sons.
