He initially served as a surgical and dressing platoon commander, later becoming a commander of a medical company. In 1974, he was transferred to the position of senior physician at the Neurosurgical District Military Hospital.
In 1983, Gaidar completed his postgraduate studies at the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, defended his doctoral dissertation, and was appointed as a lecturer. In 1985, he became a senior lecturer. In 1990, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, and in 1992, Gaidar was awarded the title of professor.
Military Neurosurgery
In December 1992, Gaidar was appointed head of the Department and Clinic of Neurosurgery at the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy and chief neurosurgeon for the Russian Ministry of Defense. In December 2000, he became the head of the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy.
Gaidar played a significant role in organizing and providing specialized assistance to victims of the 1988 Armenia earthquake. As the Chief Neurosurgeon of the Russian Ministry of Defense, he repeatedly traveled to the Chechen Republic on professional missions. He continuously improved the neurosurgical service of the Armed Forces to align with modern military doctrine.
Drawing from his research and experience, Gaidar developed an optimal algorithm for providing neurosurgical care, emphasizing the importance of complete and definitive surgical interventions to minimize the need for repeat surgeries.
Scientific Contributions
Throughout his career, Gaidar has dedicated himself to advancing the field of neurosurgery. His research interests have focused on:
Specialized Neurosurgical Care in Military Settings
- Developing principles for providing specialized neurosurgical care in the Armed Forces during peacetime and wartime, including during local military conflicts and disasters.
- Establishing a system of specialized formations for providing neurosurgical assistance in response to technological disasters and natural calamities.
Pathogenesis and Treatment of Severe Craniocerebral Trauma
- Identifying the significance of cerebral blood vessel reactivity.- Formulating principles for optimizing cerebral hemodynamics in cases of craniocerebral trauma.
Minimally Invasive Neurosurgical Techniques
- Exploring the use of minimally invasive technologies in neuro-oncology, vascular neurosurgery, and neurotrauma.
- Demonstrating the benefits of using endovendoscopic monitoring in the surgery of intracranial meningeal hematomas, tumors of the brain and spinal cord, cerebral aneurysms, and degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the spine and spinal cord.
Education and Publications
As a professor and researcher, Gaidar has actively contributed to the education and dissemination of knowledge in neurosurgery. He is the author and editor of:
- The "Military Neurosurgery" textbook (1998), a comprehensive reference covering various aspects of neurosurgical care, including organization, rehabilitation, and military-medical expertise.
- The "Neurosurgery" textbook (2002), where he contributed multiple chapters.
- Over 200 scientific publications, including monographs, textbooks, and manuals.
