Life and Career

Early Years and Education

Born on March 10, 1889, in the Chernolarskaya Fortress in the North Caucasus, Boris Galayev was the first Ossetian professional composer and conductor. He completed his secondary education in St. Petersburg in 1909 and subsequently enrolled in the Mikhailovsky Military School in Tiflis, graduating with distinction in 1913. In 1931, he furthered his musical studies at the Central Music College in Leningrad.

Military Service and Transition to Music

Galayev served as an officer in the Caucasian Army from 1913 to 1917. He distinguished himself in combat and was decorated for his bravery. Following the Russian Revolution, he served in the Red Army until 1922.

Musical Leadership in South Ossetia

From 1931 onwards, Galayev lived permanently in Tskhinvali, the capital of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. He played a pivotal role in establishing and directing various musical institutions in the region, including:
