Early Life and Military Training
Boris Ivanovich Garin was born on November 3, 1921, in Skopin, Russia, to a military family. Raised and educated in Sukhumi, he graduated from high school and joined an aeroclub. Garin enlisted in the Soviet Army in 1938 and completed his aviation training at the Stalingrad Military Aviation School in 1940, where he served as a flight instructor.
World War II Service
In January 1942, Garin joined the front lines of World War II as a member of the 617th Assault Aviation Regiment. He quickly distinguished himself in the air battles over the Kursk Salient, where he was promoted to squadron commander and transitioned from a P-5 aircraft to an Il-2.
By September 1943, Garin had flown 98 боевые вылеты, attacking enemy forces, infrastructure, and military objectives. He also shot down two enemy aircraft in aerial combat, earning him the respect of his fellow aviators.
Heroism and Recognition
On February 4, 1944, Garin was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his bravery and exceptional leadership. He continued to fly combat missions on the 3rd Ukrainian Front until the end of the war, amassing a total of 313 боевые вылеты. Garin's squadron under his command claimed 25 enemy aircraft shot down.
Post-War Career and Legacy
After serving with distinction in World War II, Garin remained in the Soviet Air Force, graduating from the Air Force Academy in 1958 and serving as a regiment commander. In 1964, he retired as a colonel due to health reasons and settled in Kiev.
Throughout his life, Garin worked tirelessly to instill patriotism and military values in the younger generation. He passed away on May 2, 1984, and was buried in Kiev's Baikovo Cemetery, where a bronze bust memorializes his achievements.
Boris Ivanovich Garin's legacy lives on through the streets named after him in Kiev and other cities, as well as the numerous young people inspired by his heroic deeds. His story serves as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the Soviet soldiers who fought for victory in World War II.
