Gertsenzon's passion for checkers ignited at a young age. As an accomplished player, he represented Leningrad in six Soviet championships and emerged as a nine-time champion in blitz chess. His exceptional skills were showcased in a remarkable record-breaking seance of simultaneous play in 1959, where he faced 103 opponents simultaneously, achieving an impressive 97 wins and 6 draws.
International Match and Record-Breaking Feats
During his military service, Gertsenzon organized a checkers seance that inadvertently led to an international match against German champion Rudolf Berns. Despite the unfamiliar German checkers rules, Gertsenzon triumphed with a decisive 9:3 score. Throughout his career, he continued to push the boundaries, giving simultaneous exhibitions even in military hospitals during the war.

Gertsenzon's influence extended beyond playing. As a prolific writer, he authored 19 books on checker strategy. He also served as a coach, mentoring three world champions, six national champions, and 62 masters of sport.
