Early Life and Education

Boris D. Karvasarsky was born in 1932. He graduated from the Naval Medical Academy in 1954. In 1957, he enrolled in the postgraduate program at the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Psychoneurology named after V.M. Bekhterev. He successfully completed his postgraduate studies in 1961 and defended his doctoral dissertation.

Professional Career

Karvasarsky joined the Research Institute of Psychoneurology named after V.M. Bekhterev after completing his postgraduate studies. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1968. He was appointed professor in 1971 and became a Merited Scientist of the Russian Federation in 1996.

Karvasarsky is a follower of the renowned psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and medical psychologist V.N. Myasischev. He is a leading scientist in the field of neuroses, psychotherapy, and medical psychology in Russia.

From 1965 to 1975, Karvasarsky also taught at Leningrad State University as a professor in the Faculty of Psychology. From 1982 to 1993, he worked at the St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.

He established the Department of Psychotherapy, which became the leading department in Russia. Four new departments were created based on this department: psychotherapy, medical psychology, sexology, and child and adolescent psychotherapy. The Department of Medical Psychology is the first independent department in the system of postgraduate education institutions. Three of these four departments at the St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education are headed by his disciples.

Leadership and Contributions

Karvasarsky holds several key positions, including:

- Chief Psychiatrist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation

- Head of the Federal Scientific and Methodological Center for Psychotherapy and Medical Psychology (since 1986)

- President of the Russian Psychotherapeutic Association, which he founded

- Chairman of the Problem Commission "Medical Psychology" of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences

He played a significant role in creating a wide network of psychotherapeutic and medico-psychological services in Russia.

Karvasarsky is also the author of over 200 scientific publications. His monographs "Neuroses" (1980, 1990), "Psychotherapy" (1985), and "Medical Psychology" (1982) made significant contributions to these fields. He is the chief editor of several encyclopedias and textbooks, including the "Psychotherapeutic Encyclopedia" and "Clinical Psychology" (a textbook for students of medical universities and psychology faculties).

Under his guidance, 122 dissertations (23 doctoral and 99 PhDs) have been defended.

Honors and Awards

Karvasarsky has received several awards and honors:

- Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland, 2nd Class" (2007)
