A Groundbreaking Discovery: The Birth of Tbilisi Dynamo and Boris Paichadze

In the realm of football, the allure never fades, as we perpetually uncover hidden gems: rising stars, revamped teams, international clubs, and occasionally, entire nations. Over time, these discoveries become commonplace, accepted norms that we anticipate. However, for me, the initial revelation was Tbilisi Dynamo and its star center-forward. And how could it be forgotten!

An Unforgettable Encounter

During my formative years as a football enthusiast, the world was considerably smaller than today's interconnected footballing landscape. Our local hubs were Dynamo and Spartak, the dominant forces around which everything revolved. To complete the scene, there were Lokomotiv, CSKA, Leningrad, and Kyiv. Though adults may have possessed a broader understanding, I viewed it through the lens of a teenager.

When the USSR Cup match between Spartak and Tbilisi Dynamo (then known as Tiflis) was announced in 1936, I was intrigued. Tiflis footballers? Who were they? It would be amusing to witness Spartak effortlessly dismantle them! With that thought in mind, I boarded a tram bound for Dynamo Stadium.

The game unfolded as I had imagined: Spartak methodically scored two goals in quick succession. Boredom began to set in. But then, something shifted. I couldn't quite pinpoint what it was, but the match ended in an unexpected 3-3 draw. It seemed absurd, a blunder... How could Spartak allow themselves to be outplayed?

A Watershed Moment

Three days later, I returned to the stadium, no longer out of curiosity but with eager anticipation. I was certain the upstart Tiflis team would be put firmly in their place. I shall not recount the details of what transpired, as that match has been immortalized in countless books as a resounding cup sensation and the catalyst for Tbilisi Dynamo's rise to prominence. Regular time ended in another 3-3 draw, but in extra time, the Georgian team struck three more goals.

Unknowingly, I had witnessed a historic event. The sight of nine goals being scored against Spartak was a profound shock. Yet, I vividly recall that my disappointment as a young Spartak fan was oddly tempered by a sense of pleasant surprise at meeting our "offenders." To put it simply, I discovered that football could be played with elegance.

The Master Center-Forward

Previously, I marveled at courage, speed, and powerful shots. However, on that fateful day, the visiting team introduced a captivating charm to the game: fluid movements, deft passing, and artful deception. And among them, there was one player who embodied all these qualities: Boris Paichadze, the center-forward.

Paichadze the Indomitable

From that distant August day until my final days, I have endeavored to attend every Tbilisi Dynamo match. Paichadze, throughout his career which lasted until 1950, became the forward I couldn't stop watching. I never had the opportunity to report from the pitch during his playing days, as I began writing for newspapers slightly later. However, I acknowledge that I owe much to this remarkable individual. Players like him shape one's understanding and appreciation of the game.

On the field, Paichadze appeared sturdy, with his feet firmly planted on the ground. It was no easy task to jostle, push, or dispossess him. Horse riders are often praised for their "seat," and Paichadze was just as steady in the saddle. While some players are known for their fragility, Paichadze was resilient, capable of protecting the ball from pressure and challenges. Yet, he remained an artist. I believe he even disliked falling, considering it beneath his dignity.

The Wandering Forward

His name is synonymous with the emergence of the "wandering forward" role. In the days of the classic "WM" formation, it was a bold innovation for a center-forward to roam freely across the entire pitch. For Paichadze, this came naturally. He mastered all aspects of the game, seamlessly executing the tasks of a winger, inside-forward, or both a forward-pressing and deep-lying center-forward. He played intuitively, guided by an impeccable sense of the game's ebb and flow.

The Essence of Paichadze

The term "wandering" suggests an element of freedom and rebellion, a role that not everyone can fulfill. It goes beyond technical ability. To "wander" effectively requires maintaining constant communication with teammates, without elevating one's importance above the collective. Here, character is tested. It is no coincidence that Paichadze captained his team for a decade; he was trusted and reliable. As far as I can recall, he never indulged in theatrical tricks to entertain the crowd, though he undoubtedly possessed the ability. Everything he did was purposeful, efficient, and conducive to the team's success.

His dribbling, while skillful, was renowned for its forward momentum, serving the attack rather than personal indulgence. In this regard, he was ahead of his time. Though it is merely a coincidence, I am not surprised that Boris Paichadze served as the director of the Tbilisi Dynamo sports complex for many years. Even in his youth, he demonstrated leadership qualities on the field.

Legacy Unfulfilled

Paichadze played in three USSR Cup finals, but his team never lifted the trophy. Tbilisi Dynamo became league runners-up six times during his tenure but never claimed the championship. It seemed as though something was always missing.

What, then, did Boris Paichadze leave behind? Merely a name and nostalgic memories for aging fans?

Fortuitously, there is another answer. Tbilisi Dynamo went on to achieve glory in the league, the USSR Cup, and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Their success was inevitable, a matter of time. Their unwavering belief in their style of football, focused on artistry and strategy, would eventually bear fruit.

The foundation was laid during Paichadze's era. His team stood firm in their convictions and played with beauty and determination. They may not have had the final say, but their successors would. I can't think of another team with such a consistent and unbroken history. The connection to the past is evident; Paichadze's Dynamo did not vanish into oblivion. It evolved into successive teams that carried on its legacy.

The True Legacy

The enduring answer is this: Boris Paichadze bequeathed to us Tbilisi Dynamo.
