Boris Paramonov: A Life in Letters
Early Life and EducationBoris Paramonov was born in Leningrad, Russia, and received his primary education at the prestigious Petrischule. He went on to study at Leningrad University's Faculty of History, earning a Candidate of Philosophical Sciences degree.
Academic Career
Paramonov began his career as a proofreader for Lenizdat. He later taught philosophy at Leningrad University. In 1978, he immigrated to New York City.
Literary Contributions
Paramonov has authored five books and hundreds of essays, primarily focusing on Russian culture, history, and literature. His writings have explored the works of notable Russian figures such as Dostoevsky, Akhmatova, Solzhenitsyn, Tsvetaeva, Gogol, and Sologub. His essays have been translated into several languages, including English, Italian, Estonian, Hebrew, and Bulgarian.
Journalistic Work
Paramonov has written extensively for newspapers and magazines both in Russia and abroad. Since 1988, he has been a staff writer for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
Honors and Recognition
Paramonov has received numerous accolades for his contributions. He was awarded the Pushkin Prize from the Alfred Toepfer Foundation in 2005. In 2006, he received the Liberty Award for his efforts to strengthen cultural ties between Russia and the United States.
