Jürgen Habermas: Biography
Jürgen Habermas, a German philosopher and the leading representative of the Frankfurt School, was born on June 18, 1929 in Düsseldorf. He studied philosophy, history, and literature at the universities of Göttingen, Zurich, and Bonn, and later taught at the universities of Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main. From 1983 to 1994, he conducted courses on social philosophy and the history of philosophy at the latter university.
Habermas gained wide recognition for his scholarly works on the examination of social relations in Western society, particularly in Germany. His books have been published not only in Europe but also in the United States and Latin American countries. Recently, he was a guest lecturer at Peking University, where he delivered lectures on human rights and democracy in bourgeois society to packed auditoriums.
Award Ceremony and Thoughts on Terrorism
The "Book Fair against the backdrop of the fight against terrorism," as described by the newspaper "Süddeutsche Zeitung," highlighted the distinct atmosphere surrounding the international book fair held in Frankfurt am Main. In this context, renowned philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas (72) was awarded the annual World Prize for "philosophical reflection on the historical path of the Federal Republic of Germany." The prize was established half a century ago by the Association of German Book Trade.
During his speech at the ceremony, the esteemed scholar cautioned against oversimplifying the issue of terrorism. "The American tragedy," stated Habermas, "revealed the vulnerability of capitalist strongholds in Western civilization, forcing us to reconsider the troubled relationship between society and religion."
