Soviet Director with Jewish Heritage
Born into a Jewish family, the Soviet director pursued his education under the tutelage of renowned theater director Yevgeny Vakhtangov at the Mansurov Studio.
Theatrical Journey
His professional career began at the 2nd Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre (1919-1924), followed by the Moscow Art Theatre (1924-1930). He also contributed to the K. S. Stanislavsky Opera Theatre (1926-1931, 1937-1939).
Educator and Mentor
From 1932 onwards, he dedicated himself to teaching, eventually becoming a professor at the School-Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1945. His influence extended beyond the classroom, serving as the inspiration for the character Ksavery Borisovich Ilchin in Mikhail Bulgakov's "Theatrical Novel."
Founder and Pioneer
A significant chapter in his career was the establishment of the Moscow Jewish Theatre-Studio "Fraikunst" (1926-1930), which he founded. He continued to work in various Jewish theaters, including the "Kunts Vinkl" in Kyiv and the State Jewish Theatre in the same city.
Personal Life and Legacy
He married actress Esther Israilevna Bongard of the "Habimah" Theatre. Their marriage gave him a close connection to the renowned actress. His nephew, Mikhail M. Bongard, went on to become a respected cyberneticist.
