Boris Vyacheslavich, Prince of Chernigov and Tmutorokan
Boris Vyacheslavich was a prince of Chernigov and Tmutorokan in the 11th century. He was likely the son of Vyacheslav Yaroslavich, Prince of Smolensk, and Oda of Stade.
Early Life and Marriage
Boris's father died in Smolensk shortly after his birth. Accounts of his childhood are conflicting. According to the chronicler Tatishchev, he received the town of Vshchizh to govern. However, the accuracy of this claim is doubtful.
The Staden Chronicle records that after her husband's death, Countess Oda returned to Germany and remarried. She brought with her a substantial portion of her late husband's wealth, which later proved instrumental in her son's struggle for power in Rus.
Rise to Power
In 1077, Boris Vyacheslavich first appears in Russian chronicles. He unexpectedly seized Chernigov but soon abandoned the city and fled to Tmutorokan, a principality ruled by Roman Svyatoslavich. Roman's brother, Oleg Svyatoslavich, soon joined the alliance.
The rulers of Tmutorokan hired Polovtsian forces and defeated Boris's uncle, Vsevolod Yaroslavich, at the Battle of Sozhitsa in 1078. They recaptured Chernigov. Vsevolod sought aid from his elder brother, Izyaslav Yaroslavich, the Grand Prince of Kyiv. Their combined forces met the Tmutorokan troops at the Battle of Nezhdtina Niva on October 3, 1078.
Death and Legacy
In the battle, Boris Vyacheslavich was killed, and his allies were defeated. His brief reign had ended in a decisive victory for the incumbent powers in Kyiv.
