Fahri Korutürk: A Distinguished Turkish Naval Officer and Statesman
Early Life and EducationBorn in Istanbul in 1903, Fahri Korutürk embarked on a military career at a young age. He enrolled in the Naval Cadet School in 1916, graduating in 1923. Following his graduation, he attended the Naval Academy in Istanbul, completing his studies in 1933.
Naval Service and Diplomacy
Korutürk's naval career saw him serve on various cruisers and submarines. He later served as a military attaché in Rome, Berlin, and Stockholm. In 1936, he played a key role as a military advisor during the signing of the Montreux Convention, which regulated the status of the Turkish Straits.
Advancement in the Navy
Korutürk rose through the ranks, becoming a Rear Admiral in 1950. He commanded several naval units before being promoted to the rank of Admiral in 1957. In 1960, he retired from his position as Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces.
Diplomatic Appointments
After his retirement from the navy, Korutürk was appointed as Turkey's ambassador to the Soviet Union by then-head of state Cemal Gürsel. He later served as ambassador to Spain.
Political Career
In 1968, President Cevdet Sunay appointed Korutürk as a member of the Senate. On April 6, 1973, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey elected Korutürk as the sixth President of the Turkish Republic. He served in this role for seven years, until April 6, 1980. After his presidency, he became a life member of the Senate.
Personal Life
In 1944, Korutürk married Emel Korutürk. They had one daughter and two sons. The surname "Korutürk" ("Protector of Turks") was bestowed on him by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Legacy
Fahri Korutürk passed away on October 12, 1987, in Istanbul. He was buried at the Turkish State Cemetery in Ankara. He is remembered as a distinguished naval officer, diplomat, and statesman who dedicated his life to serving the Turkish nation.
