NHL Draft and Early Career

Brent Sopel was a professional Canadian hockey player drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the third round (53rd overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. On January 26, 1996, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche.

Second NHL Draft and Avalanche Tenure

Sopel re-entered the draft and was selected by the Colorado Avalanche again in the fourth round (87th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He remained with the Avalanche until February 25, 2004, when he was acquired on waivers by the Atlanta Thrashers.
