July's artistic career blossomed in Berkeley, California, where she wrote and staged plays. She subsequently enrolled at the University of California, Santa Cruz, but dropped out to pursue her artistic endeavors. Filmmaking Breakthrough
In 2004, July was recognized by "Filmmaker" magazine as one of the "Twenty-Five New Faces of Independent Film." July has had a long-term relationship with artist and filmmaker Mike Mills. She maintains a close friendship with schoolmate Joanna Fateman of the post-punk band "Le Tigre."
