Early Life and Education

Bradley Darryl Wong, commonly known as BD Wong, was born on October 24, 1960, in San Francisco, California. The middle child of three sons, his parents, William and Roberta Wong, were both immigrants from Hong Kong. His mother was a telephone operator while his father worked as a postal employee.

Wong's acting talent emerged early on. As a student at Lincoln High School, he landed lead roles in school productions, showcasing his abilities in singing, dancing, and character transformations. He pursued higher education at San Francisco State University.

Theatre and Film Career

After settling in New York City, Wong found success balancing television work with his passion for theatre. His stage performances brought him equal joy and fulfillment. Notable among them was his portrayal of Song Liling in the Broadway production of "M. Butterfly." This androgynous character challenged traditional gender norms and earned Wong a Tony Award, along with four other prestigious accolades. In solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, he subsequently adopted BD as his professional name.

Wong began his film career in the early 1980s, taking on small roles in films such as "Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold." His breakthrough came with the 1991 comedy "Father of the Bride," where he played Howard Weinstein. He reprised this role in the film's 1995 sequel. By then, Wong had achieved international recognition for his portrayal of Dr. Henry Wu in Steven Spielberg's blockbuster "Jurassic Park." The film's groundbreaking special effects and record-breaking box office success established Dr. Wu as a memorable character. Wong revived the role in the franchise's fourth installment, "Jurassic World," in 2015.

Television Roles

Wong's television career boasts an impressive array of characters. He played a regular role on the sitcom "All-American Girl" for two seasons. In the long-running "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," he appeared as Dr. George Huang for 15 seasons. He also portrayed Father Mukada, a Japanese-Catholic priest, in the HBO prison drama "Oz." More recently, Wong has captivated audiences as White Rose, the enigmatic leader of the Dark Army hacking group in "Mr. Robot" and as Hugo Strange, the supervillain in "Gotham."

Personal Life

Wong is an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. He has been in a long-term relationship with actor agent Ritchie Jackson since 1988. They welcomed twins Boaz Dov and Jackson Foo via surrogacy in 2000, with Jackson serving as the biological father. Following their separation in 2004, Jackson entered a relationship with Broadway producer Jordan Roth. Together, the three men shared custody of Jackson Foo, who lovingly referred to all of them as his dads. In 2018, Jackson Foo announced that he, too, identified as gay. Wong later married Richert Schnorr in 2018.

Current Work and Legacy

BD Wong continues to expand his filmography. He reprised his role as Dr. Henry Wu in the 2022 film "Jurassic World Dominion," exploring new dimensions of the beloved character. He also lent his voice to the animated series "Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai" as Gon Wing. Wong's talent and versatility have cemented his place as a respected and enduring figure in both film and television.
