Daniel McDonald was an American actor who gained recognition for his appearances in numerous television series, including globally renowned shows such as "C.S.I.: Miami," "Law & Order," and "Sex and the City." He also had a successful career on Broadway, with one of his notable roles being in the highly acclaimed musical "Mamma Mia!" based on the songs of the legendary quartet ABBA.
Early Life and Education
Daniel McDonald was born on July 30, 1960, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. He grew up in Romulus, New York, as one of seven children in his family. McDonald completed his college education at Ithaca College. His older brother, Christopher McDonald, also became an actor and appeared in many films and television shows.
Personal Life
During the rehearsal of the musical "Steel Pier," where Susan Stroman served as the choreographer, Daniel McDonald met Mujah Maraini-Melehi. They got married in 1993. The couple has two children named Fosco and Ondina. McDonald was a lifelong member of the Actors Studio, located in New York. He received his acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and was mentored by Paul Curtis at the American Mime Theatre. He also had the opportunity to study under Sanford Meisner, a renowned acting instructor, on the island of Bequia in the British West Indies. It was during this time that he reunited with his longtime friend, photographer Michael Sanville.
Career
McDonald received critical acclaim for his performance in the lead role of the musical "Steel Pier," earning him a prestigious Tony Award in 1997. In 2002, he replaced Alan Campbell, securing the leading role in Susan Stroman and John Weidman's musical "Contact" during its national tour. Throughout his career, McDonald appeared in films such as "Sun, Sea and Boys," "Agents Falcon and Snowman," "The Million Dollar Mystery," "Blood Pays Blood," "Let It Be Me," "Rape," and "Icewind." He also had roles in television series including "Cagney & Lacey," "Call to Glory," "Murder, She Wrote," "Freddy's Nightmares," "Herman's Head," "Undercover Blues," and "New York News." His final TV appearances were in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "D.C.," "Medic," and "C.S.I.: Miami."
Death
Daniel McDonald passed away at the age of 46 on February 15, 2007, in New York City due to brain cancer. After his death, the dramatic film "The Gift: Life Unwrapped," in which McDonald portrayed the character Stefan, was released in May 2007.
