Early Life and Golf Beginnings

Austin Matthews, an American professional golfer, was born in Dupont, Pennsylvania. His passion for golf ignited early, with him using plastic clubs as a toddler and receiving his first set of "real clubs" at the age of 4. Matthews honed his skills at Emanon CC, also participating in basketball and competitive baseball as a child.

Scholastic Golf Success

Matthews attended Pittston Area High School, where he played on the golf team and became the 2010 PIAA Boys' Golf State Champion. His accolades continued in 2011, with him claiming the Philadelphia Golf Association Junior Championship.

Collegiate Career at Temple University

Matthews pursued his golf education at Temple University, where he set a school record for career tournament titles, tying Jeffrey Sisk's mark of eight set in 1986. In 2014, he earned the Dixie Amateur championship.

Professional Career

In October 2016, Matthews turned professional. Qualifying for the 2017 PGA Tour Latinoamérica, he earned his card for the 2017 season. Matthews began his professional career with a strong performance, finishing ninth in his first event and winning his second tournament, the Molino Cañas Championship.

Perseverance Through Injury

Despite facing challenges with a herniated disc and two bulged discs, Matthews overcame adversity in his 2017 campaign. He secured a promotion from the PGA Tour Latinoamérica to the Web.com Tour, earning a conditional status after finishing his rookie season in the top 45.

Successful Web.com Tour Stint

Matthews' consistency earned him full-year status on the Web.com Tour in 2018. He achieved a T7 finish at the Nashville Golf Open and a T10 at the North Mississippi Classic. Though he didn't retain his privileges on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019, he maintained his PGA Tour Latinoamérica card.

The Sportsmanship Moment

In November 2019, Matthews lost the Visa Open de Argentina title in a playoff after a fan with Down syndrome made a loud, distracting noise. Displaying remarkable sportsmanship, Matthews absolved the fan of responsibility and gifted him an autographed glove. While the loss cost him a spot in The 2020 Open, his gesture earned him a sponsor exemption to the 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational on the PGA Tour.

Return to Success

Matthews rebounded in the COVID-affected 2020-21 PGA Tour Latinoamérica season, winning two tournaments. He topped the Order of Merit, securing a return to the Korn Ferry Tour with full status for 2022. His triumph at the Astara Golf Championship marked his first Korn Ferry Tour win and propelled him to the US Open.
