Biography of Gary Player

Gary Player, a South African professional golfer, is widely regarded as one of the greatest professional golfers of all time. He has won nine major championships on the regular golf tour, six major victories on the Champions Tour, and has been a three-time winner of the Open Championship on the European Senior Tour. At the age of 29, Player became the leader in the 1965 US Open, making him the only non-American player to win all four major championships in golf. Player is one of only three players in golf history, alongside Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen, to have won all four major championships. He has competed in 165 tournaments on six continents over a span of more than 60 years. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1947.

Early Life

Gary Player, the youngest of three children, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of eight, he lost his mother to cancer. His father, who often worked away from home on gold mines, managed to take out a loan to buy Gary a set of golf clubs. Player's love for the game of golf began when he played on the golf courses in Johannesburg. By the age of 16, young Gary declared that he would become the number one golfer in the world. He turned professional a year later.

Family and Career

On January 19, 1957, Player married Vivienne Verwey, the sister of professional golfer Bobby Verwey. The couple had six children together. During the early years of his career, Player traveled from tournament to tournament with his wife, all their children, a nanny, and a tutor. Currently, Gary has 21 grandchildren. It is estimated that Player has traveled over 24 million kilometers during his career, making him one of the most well-traveled athletes in the world. Player has been given several nicknames, including the "Black Knight," "Mr. Fitness," and the "International Ambassador of Golf." He has also become a renowned golf course architect, having been involved in the design of over 325 golf courses on five continents. Player has authored or co-authored 36 books on his beloved sport.

Business Ventures and Philanthropy

In addition to his golf career, Player is involved in various business ventures. He represents the group of companies called "Black Knight International," which includes subsidiaries such as "Gary Player Design," "Player Real Estate," "The Player Foundation," "Gary Player Academies," and "Black Knight Enterprises." Through these ventures, Player is involved in licensing, hosting sports and corporate events, publishing, wine, apparel, and merchandise. Player's horse farm, "The Gary Player Stud Farm," is internationally recognized for breeding top thoroughbred horses. Player actively participates in "The Player Foundation," a charitable organization that helps underprivileged families worldwide receive education. In 1983, the foundation funded the construction of the Blair Atholl Schools in Player's hometown.

Contributions and Legacy

Player is known for his candidness, which has often subjected him to criticism. He was one of the first golfers to advocate for a healthy lifestyle and fitness, but he disapproved of Dr. Robert Atkins' low-carbohydrate diet approach. Player was the first golfer to acknowledge the need for testing for all forms of doping in golf tournaments worldwide. In 2014, the "Gary Player Invitational" charity event held in Augusta, Georgia raised over $328,000 for the education of underprivileged children. Player's contributions to the sport of golf, his business ventures, and philanthropic efforts have solidified his legacy as one of the all-time greats in the game.
