Meet Brandon Phillips - The Youngest Black Belt in Kickboxing in the UK

Brandon Phillips

Brandon Phillips, a 6-year-old boy from Wimborne, Dorset, has become the youngest British kickboxer to achieve a black belt. He started training in this demanding sport at the tender age of 2. To pass the test for his latest belt, Brandon had to showcase an impressive set of exercises, including abdominal workouts, push-ups, and challenging jumps. Additionally, during the examination, Brandon had to spar with opponents who were 8, 9, and even 12 years old, and defeat them.

Achieving Remarkable Success at a Young Age

Despite being only 6 years old, Brandon Phillips stands out as more than just an ordinary primary school student. Recently, he earned his black belt in kickboxing and is considered the youngest person in the UK to accomplish such a feat. It may seem like Brandon passed the test with ease, but the picture changes when you learn that he dedicated five days a week to grueling training sessions. During the one-hour examination, Brandon had to perform 35 repetitions of various exercises, combine them with precision strikes of his hands and feet, and also engage in shadow boxing. Despite his height of just over 110 cm, he managed to defeat opponents much older than himself.

A Proud Father and Mentor

Brandon's father, Ross Phillips, a 36-year-old professional kickboxer who runs his own martial arts school, personally trained his son. Brandon has already collected 16 belts in his young career. According to Ross, his son started training when he was around two years and two months old, even before he could speak. By that time, Ross had been overseeing his own martial arts gym at their home in Wimborne for about seven years, so he decided to impart some basic fighting skills to his son. They began with training sessions lasting no more than 5-10 minutes, but Ross immediately noticed Brandon's natural talent for martial arts. When Brandon turned 3, his father increased the duration of his training sessions. By the time he was 4, Brandon trained five days a week and passed his first kickboxing examination, earning a yellow belt. To achieve this, he had to perform 10 repetitions of exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups, squats, and demonstrate his understanding of proper fighting stance and techniques.

Continuing to Thrive

At a certain point in his martial arts career, Brandon started competing only against children older than himself since he trained at an advanced level. However, his father believes that his son is unlikely to fully comprehend just how skilled he is. Brandon is in excellent physical shape, always healthy and fit, and his parents are very proud of his achievements. He knows he cannot use his skills at school, but sports have taught him self-discipline that will stay with him for life.

A Family of Martial Artists

Brandon has an older sister, Becca, who is 9 years old and earned her black belt a month before her younger brother. Becca has been training alongside Brandon since she turned 3. Ross is incredibly proud of both his children, and it's not hard to see why.
