Early Life and Activism
Born into an affluent family in Paris, Brice Lalonde developed an interest in ecology after the moon landing in 1969. He joined the "Friends of the Earth" association in 1972 and became their president. Lalonde played a key role in the presidential campaign of ecologist candidate René Dumont in 1974.
Political Career
Despite initially resisting the creation of an ecological party, Lalonde ran as an ecologist candidate in the 1981 presidential election. He later served as State Secretary for Ecology (1988-1992) and Minister of the Environment (1990-1991) under Prime Minister Michel Rocard. During his tenure, he prominently introduced the catalytic converter requirement for the automobile industry.
Post-Government Roles
After leaving government, Lalonde founded the ecological party "Generation Ecology" in 1990. However, after the right-wing's electoral success in 1993, he shifted the party to the right. He was elected to the Regional Council of Brittany in 1977 and formed an alliance with the Liberal Democrats in 1998.
Lalonde unsuccessfully sought alliances in the 1995 and 2002 presidential elections. In 2002, he retired from active politics and resigned as President of "Generation Ecology."
Climate Change Envoy
In 2007, Lalonde was appointed as France's Envoy for International Negotiations on Climate Change, representing the country in global climate talks. He has been an active advocate for environmental protection throughout his career, playing a significant role in shaping France's climate policy.
