Antanas Škėma, a Lithuanian literary icon, was not just a writer but a multifaceted artist whose life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his beliefs.

Early Years and Education

Antanas Škėma was born on 11 November 1910, in the small town of Rosalimas, Lithuania. His formative years were spent amidst the political turmoil of interwar Lithuania. Completing his secondary education in Panevėžys, he embarked on a journey of intellectual exploration at the University of Kaunas (later Vytautas Magnus University). Studying theater, Lithuanian, English, and Russian languages and literature, he also pursued music and singing at the Kaunas Conservatory.

Involvement in Politics and Literature

Škėma's passion for social justice led him to join the youth organization "Žiežirba" and contribute to leftist publications like "Studentas" and "Žaizdras." He played an active role in the student demonstration of 15 February 1929, an act that resulted in his arrest. In the early 1930s, he distanced himself from leftist circles and became an advocate for nationalistic ideals.

A Literary Voice in the Diaspora

In the wake of Lithuania's occupation by the Soviet Union, Škėma fled to Germany in June 1940. He became a founding member of the Lithuanian Activists Front and later returned to Lithuania in 1942. In 1944, he emigrated to France and eventually settled in the United States in 1948.

Throughout his time in exile, Škėma remained a prolific writer. He published numerous collections of essays, literary chronicles, and political commentaries characterized by their sharp wit and incisive critique. His contributions to "Santarvė" magazine in America brought him widespread recognition.

Journeying on the Radio

From 1975 onwards, Škėma worked as a commentator on Lithuanian cultural and political affairs for "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty." His radio broadcasts became a vital source of information and inspiration for Lithuanians both inside and outside their homeland.

Literary Accolades and Recognition

Škėma's literary achievements were widely acknowledged. He was awarded the prestigious Vincas Kudirka Prize and the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania. His writings have been translated into numerous languages, ensuring his legacy as an important voice in Lithuanian literature.
