Hero of War and Love
Bronisław 'Grom' Karwowski, a 94-year-old World War II veteran and participant in the Warsaw Uprising, proudly walked his granddaughter down the aisle, whispering something in her ear, becoming an instant viral sensation before passing away two days after the wedding ceremony.
A Final Wedding Wish
Donning his military uniform adorned with medals of valor, Karwowski made his granddaughter, 30-year-old Joanna Sema, the happiest bride at her wedding in Bialystok, Poland. Hundreds paid their respects to the 'national hero,' who fought in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising to liberate the city from German occupation, mourning his death just two days later.
A Promise Kept
Joanna shared that her grandfather had told her how "proud" he was to have lived to witness her special day. She wept as he turned to her before leading her to the altar, saying, "I have been waiting for this moment, and I'm so proud I made it."
Viral Heroism
Despite his declining health in recent days, Karwowski was overjoyed to learn that the wedding photos had gone viral on social media and sparked numerous articles. "He promised to walk me down the aisle, and he kept his word," said Joanna. "As a qualified nurse, I was with him at home. I managed to say goodbye, and he was happy about how much attention our story has created. He said, 'We're on Facebook!'"
A Devoted Grandfather
Joanna marveled at her grandfather's resilience and was glad that so many people had learned about him. She found solace knowing that the memory of this extraordinary and loving man would live on.
Physical Challenges
In the days leading up to the wedding, Bronisław's health had taken a turn for the worse, with his family attempting to sustain him with high doses of vitamins. The veteran had undergone a pacemaker procedure four years prior. With typical humor, he had joked with his granddaughter about her needing to get married soon, as the device had an expiring date.
Emotional Ceremony
Despite these challenges, the frail pensioner refused to let his ailments prevent him from fulfilling his duty to his family. Moved to tears, guests watched as the bride struggled to compose herself, taking deep breaths as Karwowski slowly escorted her to her groom. The groom, too, had to hold back tears at the emotional spectacle unfolding before him. He thanked Karwowski for the honor and kissed him on both cheeks.
Wartime Heroics
During World War II, 'Grom' was captured by the Nazis but managed to escape from the Gestapo headquarters in Łomża, northeastern Poland. In 1948, under communist rule, Karwowski was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Post-War Recognition
His valiant deeds for his country were eventually recognized. He was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta (Knight's Cross) and various other honors.
A Hero to All
Joanna emphasized that her grandfather was a hero not only on the battlefield but throughout his life. "When I was left alone, I moved in with my grandparents, and they looked after me," explained the 30-year-old Polish woman. "My grandfather had such patience. He had 13 grandchildren, and we all competed to be near him and listen to his amazing stories."
Passing of a Legend
He had a particular fondness for berry-picking in the forest with his grandchildren, where he would take naps under an apple tree while his wife prepared treats for everyone. As for those intriguing stories, Karwowski never shied away from recounting his arduous past and what he and his family had endured during the war. Joanna admitted that, for a long time, she "didn't understand" due to her age at the time.
The Polish Armed Forces announced Bronisław's death on social media: "It is with regret that we inform you that today, on the 79th anniversary of the German attack on Poland, national hero and participant of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, Major Bronisław Karwowski, has joined the eternal watch."
One user, Mateusz Ch, commented: "He fulfilled his last mission," while Basia M added: "God bless the bride and give glory to the soldier's memory."
