Lithuanian Stained Glass Artist

Early Life and Education

Vytautas Švarlys, a renowned Lithuanian stained glass artist and recipient of the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR, embarked on his artistic journey at the Vilnius Institute of Art (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts) from 1961 to 1967.

Professional Career

In 1969, Švarlys joined the art collective "Dailė," where he honed his skills until 1985. He then moved to the Sculpture and Monumental Art Studio, where he remained until 1997. Since 1991, Švarlys has imparted his knowledge at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and became an Associate Professor of Monumental Art in 1993.

Artistic Achievements

Švarlys has created numerous stained glass miniatures and decorative and thematic витражи for interiors in over sixty buildings across Lithuania. His notable works include:

"History of Lithuanian Medicine" (1974), Vilnius Red Cross Hospital

Vitrine in the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences Library (1979)
Vitrage in the Youth Theater (1982)
Six Vitrages in the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture (1985)

Youth Theater Vitrages

The cycle of vitrages in the Youth Theater consists of 10 ornamental compositions in the vestibule and 6 narrative compositions in the second-floor foyer. The vitrages are made of thin colored glass held together by lead strips. The narrative vitrages depict famous Lithuanian figures: Kristijonas Donelaitis, Martynas Mažvydas, Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius, and Mindaugas.

Vitrage in the Vestibule of the Vilnius Academy of Arts

This large vitrage is installed in a window in the vestibule. It is symmetrical with three large medallions featuring figurative compositions. Six smaller medallions with allegorical still lifes and ornaments flank the larger ones. The subject matter of the compositions and still lifes is the history of Lithuanian science: the first Lithuanian book, the Lithuanian Scientific Society, and modern science. Lithuanian and Latin inscriptions surround the medallions.
