Childhood and Early Life
Brooke Smith was born on May 21, 1967, in the entertainment hub of New York City, USA. Her father, Eugene J. Smith, was a publisher, while her mother, Lois Eileen Wollenweber, was a publicist and advertising executive who co-founded the influential firm Pickwick Public Relations. With her family's connections in the industry, Brooke developed a keen interest in the arts. She had a close relationship with her half-brother, Scott Eugene, and looked up to him for support until he passed away in a tragic accident on Long Island.
Education and Journalism Career
After completing high school, Brooke followed in her parents' footsteps and pursued journalism. She attended college in New York City, where she eagerly embraced the field. However, her life took a different turn after her brother's death. She decided to enroll in acting classes at the Actors Studio.
Film Career
Brooke Smith's film debut came in Alan Rudolph's 1988 drama "Moderns." She gained recognition for her role as Catherine Martin in Jonathan Demme's iconic thriller "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), which starred Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. Her performance earned her critical acclaim and solidified her status as a rising star.
From there, Smith went on to appear in numerous films, including "Mr. Wonderful" (1993), "Night We Never Met" (1993), "Cucumber" (1994), "The Glass Shield" (1994), "Kansas City" (1996), "Web of Deceit" (1997), and "Truth or Consequences, N.M." In the 2000s, Brooke Smith made a mark in television. She joined the cast of Shonda Rhimes' medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Erica Hahn, a role that earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
