Biography of Bruce Cordell

Bruce Cordell is an American game designer and writer in the fantasy genre. He is the recipient of the Origins Award, an annual award for outstanding work in the gaming industry, for his module 'Return to the Tomb of Horrors' for 'Dungeons & Dragons', as well as several 'ENnie' awards. He currently resides in Seattle.

Early Life and Education

From a young age, Bruce Cordell played 'Dungeons & Dragons'. He recalls playing 'Tomb of Horrors' with future game designer Monte Cook, with whom they attended high school together. Cordell had a passion for wrestling and debates, and obtained a degree in biology from the University of Colorado.

Game Design Career

While pursuing his scientific career, Cordell worked as a freelance developer in the gaming industry. In 1995, he joined TSR full-time. He authored the trilogy 'Sea Devils Adventure', books such as 'The Illithiad', 'Shattered Circle', 'Bastion of Faith', 'Dungeon Builder's Guidebook', and modules like 'Die Vecna Die!', 'Return to the Tomb of Horrors', and 'Return to White Plume Mountain' for 'Dungeons & Dragons', as well as the book 'Targents' and module 'The Killing Jar' for the game 'Alternity'. Starting with 'The Sunless Citadel', he became one of the adventure developers for the third edition of 'Dungeons & Dragons'.

Portfolio and Influences

Bruce Cordell's portfolio in the field of role-playing games includes numerous games and books, many of which are inspired by the works of writer Howard Lovecraft. In his works, Cordell often references characters, ideas, and organizations from his other projects, creating interconnections between them. For example, the character Strom Wakeman from the organization called the Arcane Order, which is more extensively described in Cordell's 'College of Wizardry', is mentioned in his book 'The Illithiad'. Wakeman is also cited in the 'Planescape' setting and plays a significant role in the adventure 'Dawn of the Overmind'. The Arcane Order, on the other hand, reappears in the rulebook 'Time and Blood' as the basis for prestige classes.

Most of Cordell's works for 'Malhavoc Press' follow the same system. In an interview with Monte Cook, Cordell described his style as incorporating "elusive narrative threads that connect seemingly unrelated projects."
