Bruno Fernandes: A Controversial Career in Brazilian Football

Early Life and Career

Bruno Fernandes, born in Contagem, Brazil, began his football career at local club Atlético Mineiro. He made his professional debut for the club in 2002 and played in the state championship. In 2005, he debuted in the Brazilian Championship and recorded 38 matches in Serie A and 7 in the Copa do Brasil.

Move to Corinthians and Flamengo

In 2006, Fernandes joined Corinthians but never played an official match for the team. Subsequently, he was loaned to Flamengo, where he quickly established himself as a key player. Flamengo eventually purchased his rights from Corinthians in 2008.

Captaincy and Championship

Following the retirement of Fábio Luciano in 2009, Bruno Fernandes became the captain of Flamengo. Under his leadership, the team won the 2009 Brazilian Championship title. Despite not being a regular goal scorer like Rogerio Ceni, Fernandes scored memorable goals in the Carioca League, Brazilian Championship, and Copa Libertadores in 2008 and 2009.

Murder Accusation and Conviction

In June 2010, Bruno Fernandes was accused of murdering his mistress, Eliza Samudio, who had given birth to his son four months prior. Flamengo suspended his contract pending investigation. In December 2010, he was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for the murder.

Release and Plans for the Future

In February 2017, Fernandes was released from prison after receiving an amnesty. He expressed plans to retire from football at the age of 32 and pursue a career in aviation mechanics.
