Bruno Richard Hauptmann: The American Kidnapper
Bruno Richard Hauptmann was an American kidnapper who became notorious for the abduction and murder of the son of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh. He was originally from Germany and had a background as a carpenter, having completed elementary school and vocational training.
A Criminal Path
During World War I, Hauptmann served in the German army. After the war, he turned to a life of crime and was convicted in 1919. Three years later, he was arrested again but managed to escape before facing trial. In 1923, he was arrested twice in the United States for illegal entry into the country.
The Lindbergh Kidnapping
Hauptmann's name became widely known when he was connected to the infamous Lindbergh kidnapping case in March 1932. The young son of Charles Lindbergh was abducted, and despite the payment of a ransom, he was found dead.
It took two and a half years for Hauptmann to be apprehended as the kidnapper. He was caught when he tried to use one of the bills he had received as ransom at a gas station. Hauptmann attempted to shift the blame onto his friend Isidor Fischer, who had already returned to Germany and passed away. However, the evidence against Hauptmann convinced the court of his guilt.
The Execution
In April 1936, Hauptmann was executed by electric chair, despite maintaining his innocence until the very end.
