Biography of Bruno S. Frey

Bruno S. Frey is a Swiss economist and professor. He was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1941. He studied economics at the University of Basel, where he obtained several academic degrees, including a doctorate.

In 1969, Frey was appointed as an adjunct professor of economics at the University of Basel. From 1970 to 1977, he served as a professor of economics at the University of Konstanz in Germany.

During his academic career, Frey also held the position of editor-in-chief of 'Kyklos,' a renowned Swiss publication on political economy.

In 1972, Frey published his first book, 'Umweltökonomie,' in Göttingen. In 1977, he published 'Moderne Politische Ökonomie' in Germany, with an English edition released in 1978 in the UK and the US.

One of Frey's significant contributions is his critique of the so-called Homo Economicus, in which external motivation has come to prevail over internal motivation.

In 2004, Frey was invited to be one of the ten experts for the 'Copenhagen Consensus' project, initiated by 'The Economist' and funded by the Danish government. The project aims to prioritize global development initiatives.

Together with Reiner Eichenberger from the University of Fribourg and René L. Frey from the University of Basel, Frey founded the Center for Research in Economics Management and the Arts (CREMA) in Switzerland, where he serves as one of the directors.

Frey has authored, co-authored, or edited over a dozen books and has written more than 350 journal articles in the fields of economics, political science, sociology, and psychology.

In 1998, he received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland and the University of Göteborg in Sweden. In 2009, he was also honored with the same distinction from the Free University of Brussels in Belgium.

Frey has been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the 'Distinguished CES Fellow 2005' award from the CES Institute at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, in 2005, and the 'Gustav-Stolper-Prize' in 2007.

Currently, Frey is a professor at the University of Zurich, where he continues to make significant contributions to the field of economics.
