Biography of Bryan Donkin
Early Life and CareerBryan Donkin was an English engineer and industrialist. He was born in Sandoe, Northumberland, in a family of a surveyor engineer. Initially, Donkin considered following in his father's footsteps and worked as a land agent for two years. During this time, he worked for the Earl of Dorset. It was during his time as a land agent that Donkin met engineer John Smeaton. After consulting with Smeaton, Donkin decided to pursue a career in engineering. In 1792, he became an apprentice to master John Hall in Dartford. After becoming a master himself, Donkin settled in Dartford and started manufacturing special molds for paper production.
Inventions and Achievements
In 1801, Donkin began working on a prototype of a new papermaking machine called the Fourdrinier model. He presented a working version of the machine to the world in 1804, and a refined version was introduced a year later. By 1810, 18 of these machines were in operation. Although Donkin did not originate the idea for the project, he received recognition for his improvements and enhancements to the prototype. Donkin's company continued to manufacture Fourdrinier machines, and by 1851, there were approximately 200 of them in operation worldwide.
In addition to his work in papermaking, Donkin achieved success in the printing industry. In 1813, he and printer Richard Mackenzie Bacon received a patent for a "polygraphic printing machine" that used rotating prism fonts and a rotating ink block. Although the machine received some orders, it ultimately proved to be relatively unsuccessful due to its complexity and inefficient ink delivery system.
Donkin also worked with his teacher John Hall on the issue of food preservation. After conducting several experiments, he purchased a patent registered in 1812 and opened the first major tin can factory in Bermondsey. He offered his canned goods to the British Admiralty for testing, which led to significant orders for his company.
Furthermore, Donkin was involved in large-scale construction projects. He supported Thomas Telford's project to build a suspension bridge in Runcorn in 1814 and worked with Henry Maudslay on another bridge in Springfield, Chelmsford in 1821. Donkin regularly supplied machinery for various construction works, such as selling a series of dredgers to the Prussian government in 1817.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1820, Donkin worked on the development of a series of counterfeit-proof stamps, using composite printing schemes and two-color printing to prevent counterfeiting. He actively participated in various scientific and industrial organizations, including the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers and the Royal Astronomical Society.
Bryan Donkin passed away on February 27, 1855, at the age of 86. Throughout his life, he made significant contributions to engineering, papermaking, printing, food preservation, and construction. His inventions and achievements continue to impact these industries today.
